“Is there a mandatory format for CV/resumes to be followed?
Like you know APA and MLA in college papers.
Thank you, I appreciate your reply.”
Making the right choice of your resume format is what makes it easier for your potential recruiter to read and understand it. Be it chronological, functional or a combined type of formatting, your resume should still look unique, creative and interesting.
With powerful resume wording and impressive presentation of your skills, education and experience, the formatting style of your resume should bare only secondary importance for you as a job seeker. No matter what format requirements you find on the Internet, there is no mandatory style to be followed. Therefore, your main task would be making your resume look well-organized, compact, logical and easy to read.
Start with including you contact information on top of the page and move on to generating the objective. This very section should not exceed one or two sentences in length and describe your primary employment goals.
Your next step in building a resume would be description of your academic career. In the education section list the degrees you attained, provide the names of the schools you graduated from and mention your major academic achievements.
Further on, proceed to writing your experience section, customizing it in accordance with your personal career experiences, qualifications, skills and trails relevant to the position you are applying for. Make sure to be clear, logical and persuasive. Your goal is to let your potential employer know that you perfectly match their mission and goals.
For example, if you are seeking for a Sales Representative position, your work experience section may contain such related points as:
- meet with dealers, end-users, national accounts and work product
- developers;analyse competitive product offers in terms of pricing and benefits;
- estimate major sales forecasts for new products and determine new product development investments;
- evaluate gross margin goals for existing products annually;
- establish new product pricing and launch it into the marketplace;
- conduct new product training and testing for the sales force and dealer network.
In your next section, insert honors and activities which you find supportive of your main objective. Feel free to enumerate your university and community service positions, work related awards, membership in any local, national, international organizations, any academic achievements or scholarships, etc. Follow up with the skills section including only those skills, which relate to the career field you are applying for and end up with listing references upon request if preferred.
You can clearly see that resume formatting rules contain only basic requirements for general structure and layout. However, none of them are obligatory for applicants as well as for potential employers. What really matters in this case is the resume content itself, which can grasp your prospective employer’s attention from the first sight.
